Content Creation & Ownership: Keys to the Entertainment Kingdom

What's New in Entertainment?

Disney's $71.3 billion dollar acquisition of Fox, and takeover of Hulu. Netflix spending $15 billion growing their original programming library on their streaming service. YouTube expanding their catalog with content from the Discovery network. Apple TV spending $2-3 billion buying and producing new content. Amazon Prime plans on getting into more live TV. What is really going on here?
The industry is on a hunt to own and control content .

The Stats

The U.S. media and entertainment industry is the largest in the world worth $735 billion. The industry includes motion pictures, television programs and commercials, streaming content, music and audio recordings, broadcast, radio, book publishing, video games, and ancillary services and products. The U.S. industry is expected to reach more than $830 billion by 2022, according to the latest Entertainment & Media Outlook by Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC).

The Big Secret

Have we reached a tipping point when it comes to content? Some of the media conglomerates also know as the Big 6 have discovered that the new content is not being generated from within their walls. If you can't generate it fast enough, you must seek it elsewhere and buy it up if you have the means.

What Does this Mean for You?

Whoever is the owner of the content has the keys to the entertainment kingdom. Media corporations expect huge ROI (return on investment).  Content creation and ownership allows you to monetize your content. Monetizing an already popular commodity is an easy win if you can afford it. What about fresh new content? There is a good chance that the next big thing may not be coming from Hollywood.

Sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have made an impact into the traditional movie, tech and gaming landscape. Maybe the next great idea or concept might lay within you just waiting to be developed. That's what the industry is looking for. That's what the consumers want. If it's good, people will pay to see it, play it, hear it and read it, and if you do theme parks, experience it. Your content must be good, and engaging and hit your audience on an emotional level.
