2D Animation in 3D with Blender

Good news for 2D animation artists. Blender, the open source 3D modeling and animation program has a new feature called Grease Pencil which allows you to create 2D animation in 3D space. Your sketches can be converted into editable geometry which can be used in the animation process. You can also create layers with depth.

You have got to check this out! Thanks for the info Mike.

  1. Really amazing stuff; I watched 3 of the blender vids on this tool.

Question: is there a way to easily draw multiple keys and then the breakdown/inbetween? Meaning, do you know if you can draw

    A on frame 1
    B on frame 10
and then onion skin, and then draw C (breakdown/inbetween) on # 5?

That would really make this tool quite a thing, if so.

  2. I'm a 2D guy myself and have not yet messed with Blender. The only thing I can suggest might be checking some resources like these:

    https://www.blender.org/manual/fr/animation/index.html
    (see section on key frames)

    https://www.blender.org/manual/fr/interface/grease_pencil/index.html

Please reply back if you figure this out.

  3. Thanks! this looks promising:

Now in practice, controlling a long series of inbetweens might be a slog, but looks like it's possible in theory.

  4. If you get it working let us know.
Post some test for us to see.

    Thanks your feedback.

  5. Not much chance of me being able to for a while yet; snowed under with other work - but I'll be keeping an eye on this one, see how other people do with it.

  6. 3D Animation https://pinksquare.com/3d-animation/ : Precisely What Your Product Needs

The global animation market was worth $254 billion by 2017. We, however, don't anticipate it to stop there. This industry is bound to grow, especially now that it has proved to be an efficient marketing strategy.

3D animation has been synonymous with the entertainment business for the greater part of its history. This is largely due to its ability to arouse emotion and captivate. Nowadays, however, animation is present beyond the cinema halls -being used to showcase products.

That raises the question, "Is 3D product animation worth all the hype?

Well, to be honest, it WORTH A LOT MORE THAN THAT!

Think about giant brands such as Gillette and the ever popular Apple. With Gillette, for example, a boring shave is transformed into a 3D adventure. The big gain for the brand name is the perception the animation creates. Gillette was smart enough to realize that to rise above the competition, it had to move away from generic advertisement. At the end of the day, a top quality animation reflects well on your brand. That is just what a great 3D product animation will do for your brand; it will make you stand shoulders above the competition.

The advantages of 3D animation- as a marketing strategy- can be summed up in three main points:

    1. Prototyping Magic: A lot of money goes into designing a prototype to test the market. To be fair, they do the job but, what if there was a more affordable alternative? Well, now there is. 3D product animation models your product in a virtual world and exposes it to the market. This way, you have the feedback synonymous with prototypes without the expense.

2.First Impressions last Forever: The most fascinating items rarely look the part. Think about Gillette adverts without the entertaining 3D aspect. Would it not place you to sleep in the very first five seconds?

With 3D product animation, however, a boring product is changed into an adventure of cinematic proportions. In the online world, any product gets exciting with some 360-degree turns and just the right amount of special effects. When done right, animation will endear your brand to the relevant niche.

Apple's iPhone X is a great example of this trend. Its advertising relied greatly on 3D models. Many other brands including Microsoft, Huawei, and Samsung have also employed 3D product animations. This is the reason why it's so hard to beat these companies.

    3. All about The Money: 3D product animation will save you lots of money. The animation can be used long before the marketing phase to determine problems in the product design. Designers are afforded the chance to improve the brand before the prototypes come out.

Animation also makes it possible to promote the item cost-effectively. Just take a look at the popularity of 3D modelling rigs and Virtual Reality equipment to have a feel of just how hungry the world is for 3D.

In conclusion, your product has a lot to gain from 3D technologies. They add mystique, suspense, and glamor to products. Animation also provides the brand legitimacy as a modern oriented company. Bad first impression has been the doom of many products.

Don't be part of that statistic. Abandon generic marketing strategies. Make your item the hero of an animated ad. Everybody loves those, or don't you?
